Phonics
What is Jolly Phonics?
Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing. It starts with learning the letter sounds of English. Children then learn how to ‘blend’ these letter sounds together to read a word, so that d-o-g becomes the spoken ‘dog’. They then learn how to ’segment’ a word into its sounds, so that the spoken ‘dog’ is heard as d-o-g. This is necessary for writing. To put the learning into practice, suitable ‘decodable’ reading books are used.
MultiSensory, Fun and Engaging
Jolly Phonics programmes incorporate stories, songs, actions, and games – appealing to a variety of learning styles and needs. Involving multiple senses also helps reinforce children’s learning – making it easier for them to remember and apply new skills.
Our Jolly Phonics resources include a variety of fun and engaging activities such as:
- - multi-sensory animations for formation, blending and segmenting
- - stories, songs, games and flashcards to support learning
- - playful but purposeful whole-class activities to keep children engaged
- - audio and worksheets
A Comprehensive Programme
We recognise that choosing a Phonics programme is an investment and a decision with long-term impact for your school.
Our Phonics programme:
- - extends from Reception to Year 6
- - is fully aligned with the curriculum and Ofsted requirements
- - is aligned with the Science of Reading (a body of research into how children learn to read and write, and the most effective ways to teach them)
And our programmes don’t stop at Phonics! We continue supporting your pupils all the way through to Year 6 with our Jolly Literacy resources.
Adaptable
We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and recognise the expertise of teachers to deliver lessons to suit the specific needs of their pupils. Our range of resources give teachers the freedom to do so, whilst providing the extra support, where needed.
You can also choose the teaching methods that work best for your school – print, digital (Jolly Classroom) or a combination!
